Early language refers to the preverbal skills (e.g. imitation, joint attention) and language skills (understanding/use of words and gestures) learnt in the first 3 years of life.
Speech Pathologists can help when your child is having difficulties in the above areas. For example, your child might understand quite well but they are using minimal, if any, words and may be relying on gesture to get their message across and their needs met.
Please refer to our Developmental Milestones for a summary of expected developmental achievements by age.
Our therapists can assess and treat early language difficulties. Treatment is conducted via parent training where we demonstrate the appropriate therapy techniques within sessions. The parent then uses these techniques in meaningful interactions at home. Feedback is provided to the parent each session, any problems are discussed and further techniques are introduced. Research indicates that early language intervention is best conducted through play and in their natural environment, as this is how children learn best.
